Welcome to the latest way to keep up to date on all the Chesapeake Synchronized Skating (CSS) News! Each month the newsletter will be posted on the website and will have information about the club as well as individual team updates.

Schedule Updates:

Power Class- 3/7, 3/14, 3/21, 3/28, 4/11, and 4/18 from 11am-12pm. This class is STRONGLY recommended for all Chesapeake Synchro skaters. Attendance is being noted.

REQUIRED skill sessions- These are for skaters who would like to skate with one of our teams in the 2010-2011 season.

3/7 and 3/21

2009-2010 Sailors and additionally invited skaters: 12p-1p

2009-2010 Skipjacks and Topsails: 1p-2p

There is a $20 charge per skater for each off season skill session (currently March 7 and 21) that Julie Kocur will be collecting (checks or cash) at the beginning of each skill session.

The Sailors skills session is required as Lauren will be teaching footwork sequences the skaters will NEED to be practicing over the next few weeks. In order to skate in the intermediate division next year, the skaters will need to master these sequences by the start of practice. In addition, we will be learning new IJS elements in formation. These are team elements done in formation and thus, not able to be made up on a freestyle session.

The Skipjacks will be learning new steps, turns, patterns and synchro elements in formation. The Topsails will be having team practice with coach Molly to prepare for the upcoming exhibition.

Chesapeake Synchronized Skating Skipjacks, Sailors, and Admirals will be off 6/13-7/17. They will resume practice on 7/18.

Topsail Schedule:

As outlined in previous emails to the team, the Topsails will practice according to the following schedule.

3/21 1-2pm Cost $20 Note: this is not on public session ice. This is only for synchro members and this is why the cost is higher.

Competition Updates:

Easterns:

Chesapeake Synchronized Skating is extremely proud of the performance of our teams at the 2010 Eastern Sectionals.  This was the largest sectional in U.S. history, and all three of our teams that competed there have something to celebrate.

·         In their first year as a synchronized skating team, the Chesapeake Admirals medaled by placing 4th out of 12 teams in the Open Adult Division.  WOW!

·         In a year where 10 out of the 12 skaters are new to the Sailors team, the Chesapeake Sailors placed 2nd in their Qualifying Round, advancing them to the Championships.  Their final standing was 7th out of an Open Juvenile Field of 24 teams.

·         In the team’s first year in the highly competitive Pre Juvenile Division, the Chesapeake Skipjacks placed 4th in their Qualifying Round, advancing them to the Championships.  Their final standing was 11th out of a Pre Juvenile field of 25 teams.

Connecticut:

·      The Sailors had an outstanding final performance and placed tied for second with four other teams. The tie-breakers were extremely close and they ended up 5th overall.

·      The Skipjacks placed second in their division and received a medal for the first time this season!

Fundraising Updates:

●  The Topsails will be hosting a bake sale during the Iceworld basic skills competition on March 27th. All club members are asked if they would be willing to donate baked items to sell to support this team. If you are able to donate, please contact Dawn Zulauf at dawn.jff@gmail.com. Your help is GREATLY appreciated.

Planning Meeting:

The club planning committee meeting scheduled for January 3, 2010 was postponed to allow the club to focus on the competitions and the Holiday show. Tryout planning is currently underway and volunteers are urgently needed to assist with this. If you are able to help with posting flyers, recruiting, or even assisting on the day of the try-out, please contact Rochelle Mendelsohn.

Topsail News:

The Topsail team has experienced a surge of interested skaters over the past few weeks. Yay!!!!! Coach Molly is working with the girls to learn their program for the March 27th exhibition at Iceworld. Any and all synchro skaters who are available to come cheer them on would be GREATLY appreciated. Skaters are welcome to still join this team, so if you know of any beginner skaters, please refer them to Lauren for information regarding the coming season.

Skater Kudos:

Congrats to Rachel G. for passing her Pre-Juvenile MIF!
