Welcome to the latest way to keep up to date on all the Chesapeake Synchronized Skating (CSS) News! Each month the newsletter will be posted on the website and will have information about the club as well as individual team updates. Fall Schedules:The team practice schedule is as follows: Admirals: 10-11am off-ice & 11-11:50am on ice Sailors: 4:30-6:15pm off-ice & 6:15-7:45pm on ice Skipjacks: 2:45-3:15pm off ice & 3:15-4:30pm on-ice Topsails: 3:15-4pm on-ice (They will add off-ice from 2:45-3:15 as the team progresses in skills and program content, but an exact date is not yet known.) Pin Update: The Chesapeake Synchro pins have been ordered. The price per pin is $2.25. There are extras that will be sold on a first come basis. You can request extras from Coach Lauren at any practice or get them from Matt at any competition. Uniform and Dress Update: Dresses have been ordered for all the teams except the Topsails. One sample dress per team is currently being made and has arrived for the Skipjack and Sailor teams. Once the teams have seen the dress design and Coach Lauren approves the fit, the dresses for the rest of the team members will be made. Practice uniforms have been ordered for all teams. If you have a problem with your order, or need to order more, let Julie Kocur know ASAP so that we can take care of it. Fundraising Updates: ● October 24th will be our CSS Halloween themed skate fundraiser. We are working hard to get the Skipjacks and the Sailors programs ready so that the girls can exhibit them at the start of the night. We are also in the process of soliciting businesses for donations for either door prizes or gift cards we can use to purchase supplies for the event. We need people to hand out request letters to businesses and then follow up with a phone call to see if they are able to make a donation. Please let Julie Kocur, Dawn Zulauf, Michaela Lintz, Brenda Peggs, or Julie Toothe know if you can help out in this way. Please continue to sell tickets to the event. This is our biggest club-wide fundraiser and we need EVERYONE’S help to make it a success. As we get closer to the event, there will be a sign-up sheet for set-up, clean-up, and various jobs during the event. Every family is expected to help out in some way with this event. Even if you are unable to help the night of the event, there are jobs that you can do prior to the event. Please manage your schedule accordingly. ● We are now finished with the chocolate bar fundraiser. Please turn in money collected to either your team fundraising chair or to Julie Kocur. Team profits will not be available until all money per team is turned in. Team Sponsorship Levels: Dawn Zulauf has finalized our team sponsorship program levels. We are using it to solicit business donations in return for advertising. Please promote our club to businesses with whom you frequent. The sponsorship level explanation form and application is under the sponsor link of the website. Feel free to print off copies and hand them out to businesses. A general donation request letter is already available for you to print and hand out in the members only section of the website. 501(c)3 Status: We are currently pursuing non-profit status and need several people willing to help fill out all the necessary paperwork as well as to make sure we meet the regulatory guidelines for maintaining this status. If you are interested in helping on this committee, please contact Dawn Zulauf at dawn.jff@gmail.com Website Calendar: Thank you to Willow Fyffe who has been updating the calendar on the website. Please contact her with any additions that you would like added to your teams calendar. Picture Request: We would like to encourage parents and skaters to take pictures at team events and fundraisers!!!!! Please submit your pictures to Matt so they can be used on the website and at the end of the year. You can either email them to him or give him copies. You can also log on to the website under members only and under view photos, request a photo album be added. Follow the directions on the website and Matt can add a new album so that you can upload them yourself. This way everyone within our teams can log into the website to see photos of each team. We also need pictures for the website. The sailboat pics on each page need to be updated with this year's skaters in addition to each team's home page. When submitting pics to Matt, please identify any pictures that you do not want used on the main section of the website. Picture Board Maintenance Committee: We would like to have a volunteer(s) from all the teams to be considered for the Bulletin Board Committee. This group would be responsible for updating and managing the picture board next to our synchro bulletin board. This space is currently being redesigned to have space for all the teams as well as to display our trophies etc…. If interested, please let Lauren know. Admiral News: Dawn is working on fundraisers. There will be a fundraiser night at Looney's pub. Dawn is also working on a fifty/fifty fundraiser. Updates are coming. The team is still undecided about the team name.
Sailor News: Upcoming events include the Skating Fundraiser on Oct 24, the scratch-off fundraiser and a Five Below Fundraiser in Whitemarsh in December. Updates are coming.
We are also collecting items to turn into money. Please donate empty cartridges, unused cell phones, and aluminum cans. Bring them in to any practice!!! Thanks to all the parents and skaters who helped making this a success.
Once we have reached our fundraising goal, the girls and their parents have agreed on getting indoor team jackets with the money raised.
Skipjack News: ●The girls are continuing to learning their program and are working hard on traveling circles; shoot the ducks in a circle; and spread eagles. They need to keep practicing shoot the ducks by themselves. ●September 12 is the Abingdon Library yard sale/ bake sale went very well. We raised $189.40, so minus the $10 fee, we made $179.40! Luckily the rain held off until we were done. Thank you to everyone who donated items for the yard sale. The bake sale portion went very well and we had very few items left over!!! ●The Five Below fundraiser went well also. Thank you to the Peggs, Jones, Cramer, Taylor, Zorn, and Kocur families for attending and helping to make this fundraiser a success. We raised $165.37 from Five Below and $29.40 on bake sale! Topsail News: We are still looking for more skaters for this team. If anyone you know is interested in learning more about synchro or is interested in skating synchro, please contact Rochelle Mendelsohn or Lauren Neidig for more information. For September and October, the Topsails will NOT have off-ice. They will have off ice at 2:45-3:15 in addition to their on-ice practice time as their program progresses and there is a need for extra practice. Stay tuned for updates. Skater Kudos: Skipjacks: Kim P. passed her preliminary MIF Sailors: Alyssa M passed her Pre-juv Moves and Aidan L passed her Ten Fox and Fourteen Step (dances).
Congrats to you all!!!! If your skater has any new accomplishments, please email Julie Kocur so that they may be included in the next newsletter. USFSA Registration Requirements: All members of the synchro teams must have a USFSA number to enter competitions. All teams (except the Topsails because they are competing at beginner level) must have a full membership in either a figure skating club or as an unaffiliated member. To register with a figure skating club, simply fill out the application from that club and turn it in with a check for the membership cost to the club. If you wish to remain unaffiliated, you need to log onto www.usfigureskating.org and sign up through them. Either way the cost is between $85-$100 for membership. It is valid from July 1, 2009- June 30, 2010. The Topsails fall into a different category. Because they are beginner level, they only need the basic membership and the cost is approximately $30 for this type of membership. Once the registration form is completed, the skater will receive a USFSA number. Regardless of the membership type, once you have a USFSA number, please let the competition coordinator for your team know so that we can update the appropriate forms.
Competition Requirements: Before each competition, all skaters must sign a waiver that basically gives permission for the skater to compete in the competition. This form is sent in with the application when the competition registration is sent in. Each team has a competition coordinator, they are also collecting signatures for the waiver, release, and consent to treat form for each skater. These are taken to each competition so that we have a written copy on site. Using the USFSA number, the skater must also log on to the USFSA website. The username and password is the skater USFSA number. Once you have logged on for the first time, you will be required to change the password, so you can make it anything you would like. Once you have logged in, you need to go to online event registration, then event manager, then waivers. You will fill out the same waiver forms on line and submit them so that USFSA has a copy as well. You will also complete the medical form and submit that online. Once you have completed all of these things, you do not need to complete them again unless some of your information changes. (i.e. medical info etc…) Skater Spotlight: Each month we would like to feature skaters from each team so that all the members can get to know each other. Please have either yourself or your skater submit a paragraph about themselves for publication in the newsletter. (Information by underage skaters must be approved by the parent prior to submission.)
